Notebook compatibility is a mechanical question disguised as a size question. Width and height describe the footprint; the binding decides how pages behave, how a cover attaches, and whether the book can accept replacements at all.
Four mechanisms appear repeatedly in Japanese stationery: thread-stitched bound books, saddle-stitched inserts, elastic-band refill systems, and ring binders. Each has a different compatibility boundary.

The word “refillable” means something different in each row. A TRAVELER’S notebook swaps booklets. A ring binder swaps individual sheets. A Hobonichi cover may be reusable while the dated book inside remains permanently bound.
Thread-stitched bound books
Thread stitching joins folded groups of pages through the spine. The current MD Notebook specification describes thread stitching and a 180-degree opening. Hobonichi’s current Original specification also describes stitch binding that allows the planner to lie flat.
This construction supports a stable writing surface and a coherent book block. It does not permit individual pages to be rearranged. When the notebook is full, the whole book is archived or replaced.
Compatibility questions therefore move to the exterior:
- Is the cover designed for the exact book family?
- Can it accept the current thickness?
- Does the book have an attached hardcover that changes its outer dimensions?
- Are corners, spine shape, and closure positions accommodated?
Two thread-stitched books can share A6 pages but need different jackets. The term A6 tells you the nominal page footprint; the product specification tells you the object that must enter the cover.
Saddle-stitched inserts
A saddle-stitched insert is formed from folded sheets fastened along the fold, commonly with staples. Current TRAVELER’S notebook refills use this compact booklet form across many paper types and layouts.
The insert is replaceable as a unit. That gives a refill system modularity without loose sheets: one booklet can hold a calendar, another notes, another watercolor paper, and another pockets or cards. The leather shell remains while finished booklets are removed and archived.
The critical fields are refill family and dimensions. Regular refills belong in the Regular system; Passport refills belong in the Passport system. The product names are stronger compatibility signals than a loose comparison such as “about A5” or “passport-like.”
Third-party inserts should be checked against width, height, thickness, and the center-fold position used by the elastic. A booklet that is slightly too wide can overhang the cover. One that is too thick can distort the closure when several refills are combined.
Elastic-band systems
The TRAVELER’S notebook shell holds inserts with elastic rather than rings or a glued spine. A connecting band can join multiple refills, which are then secured inside the cover.
This mechanism creates two capacity limits. First, the leather shell has a finite width around the assembled booklets. Second, the elastic has to hold the stack without excessive strain. An official statement that several refills can be connected is not a promise that every possible combination will close identically; paper thickness, zipper cases, pockets, and accumulated material all change the stack.
System compatibility remains straightforward: match Regular with Regular and Passport with Passport. Capacity is a separate, use-dependent question. A matrix should therefore distinguish “belongs to the system” from “recommended number in this exact loaded configuration.” Bungu Atlas records the first and avoids inventing the second.
Ring binders
Ring systems make individual pages removable, but they introduce the most metadata. A correct size alone is insufficient. The sheet needs the correct number of holes, spacing, and margin, and the binder must have enough ring capacity.
Kokuyo’s current Campus range illustrates why the product name must be read fully. Its Binder Notebook line includes notebook-like binders in several sizes. The current note-size product page lists B5, A4, and A5 variants using a four-ring structure. Elsewhere in the Campus ecosystem, conventional loose leaf is commonly described with many more holes, such as 26 for B5 and 30 for A4.
Those facts are not contradictory. They identify different mechanisms within a broad brand family. “Campus B5” is not a complete compatibility statement. “Campus Binder Notebook B5, four holes” is much closer.
For any ring product, record:
- nominal paper size;
- exact sheet dimensions;
- number of punched holes;
- hole spacing or named standard;
- ring capacity;
- sheet orientation.
If a retailer omits hole spacing, use a manufacturer accessory list or template before assuming that a punch or refill fits.
Reusable cover is not the same as refillable book
Hobonichi’s standard system combines a permanently bound dated book with a reusable outer cover. The official A6 cover listing explicitly names compatible books such as Original, Avec, Planner, and Day-Free. That makes the cover system refillable at the book level, even though the book itself does not accept replacement pages.
HON changes the equation because the book has its own attached hardcover. The current official dimensions are larger than the underlying A6 or A5 paper footprint. Accessories and covers need a HON-specific statement; the standard page size is not enough.
This distinction helps classify products:
- replaceable sheets: ring binder;
- replaceable booklet inserts: elastic refill system;
- replaceable whole bound book inside a reusable jacket: planner cover system;
- non-refillable standalone book: ordinary bound notebook.
Lay-flat is a behavior, not a universal standard
Manufacturers use different constructions to help a book open flat. Thread stitching can allow folded sections to relax. A binder can fold back when its hardware and cover are designed for it. A saddle-stitched insert opens naturally at its center but may resist near the first and last pages.
“Lay-flat” does not specify how much hand pressure is required at every page, and this site has not physically tested that behavior. The claim is included only where an official source makes it, and it should not be expanded into a comparative ranking.
A compatibility checklist
Before ordering a refill or cover, answer these questions in order:
- What is being replaced: sheet, booklet, bound book, or outer cover?
- What family name does the manufacturer assign?
- What are the exact width, height, and thickness?
- If punched, what are the hole count and spacing?
- Does an official page explicitly list the other item as compatible?
Stop at the first unknown. A precise unknown is safer than a confident guess, especially when international return shipping costs more than the refill.

Preserve the source with the measurement
A compatibility note without a source date becomes weaker as product lines change. Store the manufacturer URL, item number, and verification date beside the measurement. If a later revision changes ring spacing or book thickness, the older record can be recognized as historical rather than silently treated as current.
This is especially important for dated planners and limited accessories, where a familiar family name can persist while materials or construction details change between annual editions.
